Cannabis flower — the dried buds of the cannabis plant — remains the most commonly used form. Typically smoked in joints, pipes, or bongs, flower delivers THC rapidly to the bloodstream through the lungs. While many users perceive flower as «natural» and therefore harmless, regular use can lead to respiratory issues similar to tobacco smoking, including chronic bronchitis and reduced lung function. Daily flower use significantly increases the risk of developing cannabis use disorder, particularly when use begins in adolescence.

Cannabis concentrates are produced by extracting THC and other cannabinoids from the plant material, resulting in products with THC concentrations of 60-95% — far higher than the 10-25% found in cannabis flower. These concentrates are consumed through dabbing, vaping, or adding to joints. The rapid delivery of extremely high THC levels dramatically increases the risk of dependence, psychosis, and cannabis hyperemesis syndrome (severe nausea and vomiting). First-time concentrate users may experience extreme anxiety, panic attacks, or hallucinations due to the potency.

Edibles — cannabis-infused foods and drinks — have become increasingly popular. They produce a delayed onset (30-90 minutes) but longer-lasting and often more intense effects compared to smoking, as THC is metabolised by the liver into 11-hydroxy-THC, a more potent compound. This delayed onset frequently leads to accidental overconsumption, where users consume more before feeling the initial dose, resulting in extreme intoxication, panic, and emergency room visits. The prolonged duration makes edibles particularly disruptive to daily functioning.

Synthetic cannabinoids are laboratory-produced chemicals that bind to the same brain receptors as THC but with unpredictable and often dangerous effects. Despite being marketed as «legal highs,» they are far more potent and toxic than natural cannabis. Users frequently experience severe anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, seizures, elevated heart rate, and kidney damage. The chemical composition varies between batches, making dosing impossible and overdose risk significant. Dependence develops rapidly, and withdrawal is more severe than with natural cannabis.

Modern cannabis cultivation has produced strains with THC concentrations exceeding 25-30%, compared to the 2-5% common in the 1980s and 1990s. These high-potency strains, including popular varieties like «Skunk» and new hybrid strains, are associated with significantly higher rates of cannabis use disorder, first-episode psychosis, and treatment-seeking. Daily users of high-THC cannabis are roughly five times more likely to develop a psychotic disorder than non-users. The risk is particularly elevated for adolescents and young adults whose brains are still developing.
